We couldn’t believe it when we found out that our next collab was going to be with the one and only Jimmy Balito! He took a few moments out of his busy schedule to chat to us about on-stage mishaps, superstitions, and we just had to ask him about his time on The Voice…

You were a contestant on The Voice UK this year. What was the biggest thing you learnt during this experience?

I guess the biggest thing I learnt from The Voice is to never stop trying to impress. Every time you pick up the mic you should be looking to WOW! As a songwriter and a multi-instrumentalist, it’s sometimes easy to forget the importance of a great and engaging top line. Having to just stand and sing without an instrument, or telling stories through my own songs, helped me to focus on being the best singer I can be.

Who are your favourite musicians?

Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Dave Grohl, Hubert Parry.

Do you play any instruments? If so, when and why did you start playing?

Yeah, I played drums from a young age, and then started teaching myself instruments when I was about 15. Mostly because I didn’t want to rely on anyone else to help me out, I didn’t just want to sing, I wanted to create my own stuff. I started with the ukulele then went to guitar and then piano. I’d say piano is my top instrument, but I play guitar and drums pretty well too.

What one song do you wish you’d written?

500 Miles by The Proclaimers. Imagine screaming that at a festival to thousands, such a tuuuuune!

Were your musical tastes influenced by anyone?

I’m the youngest of 7 kids, so I had loads of different musical influences around me growing up. My parents both loved music and my dad was an awesome guitarist. I had a great musical upbringing listening to anything and everything from Metal, Punk, Hip hop, Pop, Folk/Americana to Classical. I always loved soul music and great story writers. Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Sting, Elton John, Carrol King… I love them all!

What’s been your most embarrassing onstage mishap?

I remember it was one of the biggest gigs I’ve played! It was down in Brighton and right at the chorus of the last song I yanked my mic lead too hard and my mic cut out. I then freaked out and snatched the backing singer’s mic so quick that I smacked myself in the mouth with it. Pretty awks! To be fair I don’t think that many people noticed. But it hurt like hell.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about applying for the Voice UK this year?

Definitely not to rush. Age may have relevance in TV but not in music. Make sure you’re the best you can be and are at the right level. If you want to show the world you’re an amazing singer, that’s fine, go for it as it is a competition. However, if you really want to be an artist and have a career not just as a singer but as a musician, make sure you’ve done your preparation. It’s SO important to know who you are and where you want to go before you go on the show. That way you can make the most of what the show gives you, PLUS you’re way more likely to be successful in the long run.

Do you have any superstitious rituals before you perform live?

Not really, I try not to play too many mind games, I think I'd get hooked on that stuff if I did! I’ve started doing way more elaborate warm-ups though, push ups, squats, stretching and running about, just things to generally stay calm, keep the voice fresh and energy levels up!

What do you listen to when you need inspiration?

If I ever need to fall back in love with music, I take a break from my own stuff and go enjoy other people’s music. I go to a big gig or a festival and see what amazing things other artists are doing. Envy is great for inspiring me. I can’t wait to get playing again after seeing someone else smashing it

What is your song of shame?

No regrets – Dappy. Just an absolute dirty banger, had some funny times with that song, got the world’s best key change.

When do you know you’re 100% happy to stop working on a song and share it with others?

This is a problem for every songwriter and producer, and there is no answer to be honest. I think fresh ears is the key. Leave it for a while then come back and listen like the first time. I personally think less is more, so the listener can fill in the rest. Don’t keep adding random layers, if the song is really missing something, it will be obvious.

If you could go back in time to meet anyone from the past, who would it be?

My Dad.

Which country would you love to tour in? And would your beloved VW camper be a tour essential?

I’ve always wanted to go to Japan. There're loads of places I want to go, I think one of my top priorities in life is to see the world, if I can do that whilst playing music, that would be sick. I would love to do a UK tour in the VW camper soon! think there’s some plans for that already…
